What Is DTF Printing?

A Simple Explanation of Direct-to-Film Printing

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a modern printing method where logos are first printed onto a special film and then transferred onto any garment using a heat press. This creates an eye-catching, full-colour design that can be placed anywhere on the fabric.

Unlike traditional methods, DTF allows for detailed designs, colour gradients and colour combinations, making it ideal for complex logos and branding with small text.

Why Penguin Uniform Uses DTF for All Our Printed Logos

We use DTF printing because it offers the best balance of quality and durability for uniforms. It works consistently across different garment types and colours, making it ideal for workwear bundles and deals.

Our In-House Graphics Team: Logo Support You Can Rely On

Our in-house graphics team ensures your logo looks its best on every garment you choose. From adjusting colours for light and dark fabrics to refining layout and detail, we make sure your branding translates perfectly onto workwear.

If your logo isn't print-ready, we'll help get it there. Whether it needs cleaning up, adjusting or reworking for better results, our team will make sure your final print is professional across your entire order. No work begins until you've approved your logo.

For the best results, send your logo as an Adobe Illustrator (.ai) file this allows us to skip the vectorising step and get your proof to you faster. If you don't have access to the original file, we can also work with PNG, JPEG and most other common formats.

Products That Work Best with DTF Print

Printing works best on tightly woven or knitted fabrics like cotton and polyester t-shirts and hoodies. These fabrics allow printed logos to bond securely and last even after multiple wears and washes. Hi-vis tops and waterproof jackets are also highly recommended for DTF print. Embroidery can catch on hi-vis material, especially for large logos, and can break the waterproof seals on jackets. DTF printing offers a quality and safe branding option for both.

We do not recommend print for highly textured or "fluffy" fabrics. Products like standard fleeces or heavy-knit wool don't provide the smooth surface needed for the film to bond properly. For these items, we always recommend exploring our Embroidery Services instead.

DTF Printing FAQs

DTF works on a wide range of fabrics and is suitable for most workwear. It performs best on cotton and polyester garments such as t-shirts, hoodies, jackets and hi-vis. We do not recommend DTF for fluffy or heavily textured fabrics like fleeces, embroidery is a better option.

DTF printing is ideal for detailed, full-colour logos with gradients and fine lines. Embroidery is better suited to simpler designs and tends to be longer lasting. Many customers combine both using an embroidered chest logo with a large printed back for t-shirts and midlayers.

Wash at 30°C, inside out, with similar colours. Avoid tumble drying, bleaching, or overloading the machine. Any chalk or frame marks from the printing process will disappear after the first wash.
